When medication might be part of the picture

Therapy is powerful, and sometimes it’s one part of what helps. For many people living with depression, anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, or other mental health conditions, the right medication — carefully chosen and monitored — can lower the volume enough for therapy and daily life to work better. Deciding whether medication is right for you deserves a real conversation, not a rushed prescription. That’s the approach we take at Mend Counseling.

Evaluation and medication management with a specialist

Psychiatric care at Mend is provided by Mikiyas “Mike” Hailemichael, DNP, PMHNP — a doctorally prepared psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. Your care begins with an initial psychiatric evaluation, a longer first appointment (about 60 minutes) devoted to understanding your history, symptoms, health, and goals before any recommendation is made. If medication is started, follow-up appointments (about 30 minutes) give you regular time to talk about how it’s working, discuss side effects honestly, and adjust together. You will never be pressured toward medication — the goal is a plan you understand and feel good about, whether or not that includes a prescription. Bring your questions to every appointment: what a medication is for, how long it usually takes to notice a change, what side effects to watch for, and how you’ll know together if it’s helping. Good medication management is a conversation, and your experience of how you’re feeling is essential information, not an afterthought.

One team for therapy and medication

Because Mend offers both therapy and medication management, your care doesn’t have to be split between offices that never talk to each other. Many clients work with a Mend counselor and with Mike for medication support, with care coordinated in one place. Psychiatric appointments are available by telehealth — secure, HIPAA-compliant video through SimplePractice — so you can meet from home anywhere in Wisconsin, and in person at our Appleton and Mequon offices with select providers, during our hours, Monday–Friday, 8:30am–5:30pm.
