EMDR Therapy in Wisconsin
Some experiences don’t fade the way ordinary memories do. A car accident, a loss, a difficult childhood, an assault, a medical emergency — long after the event, reminders can bring the feelings rushing back: anxiety, numbness, trouble sleeping, a startle response you can’t explain, or the sense of being stuck in something that already happened.

For experiences that won’t stay in the past
Some experiences don’t fade the way ordinary memories do. A car accident, a loss, a difficult childhood, an assault, a medical emergency — long after the event, reminders can bring the feelings rushing back: anxiety, numbness, trouble sleeping, a startle response you can’t explain, or the sense of being stuck in something that already happened. If that sounds familiar, EMDR therapy may help. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a well-established therapy designed to help the brain process distressing memories so they lose their emotional charge and become part of your past, where they belong.
What EMDR is like
EMDR doesn’t require you to retell your story in detail or relive it over and over. Working with your clinician’s guidance, you’ll briefly bring a difficult memory to mind while following a pattern of bilateral stimulation — often eye movements — in sets. Over time, the memory typically becomes less vivid and less distressing, and new, healthier perspectives can take root. EMDR at Mend is provided by Abby Janssen, LCSW, CSAC, an EMDRIA Certified Clinician and Consultant — meaning your care is guided by advanced, specialized training in this approach. Lauren Bartelt, LPC, also offers EMDR therapy at Mend, with a trauma-informed approach for clients 16 and older. Your treatment moves at your pace, and building stability and coping skills always comes before processing hard material. Early sessions focus on preparation: understanding how EMDR works, identifying what you’d like to feel different, and making sure you have solid ways to settle yourself between sessions.
EMDR by telehealth, anywhere in Wisconsin
Mend offers EMDR by secure, HIPAA-compliant video through SimplePractice, so you can do this work from the privacy of your own home, anywhere in Wisconsin. Some of our EMDR clinicians also see clients in person at our Appleton and Mequon offices. Many clients actually prefer processing from a familiar, comfortable space, with their own surroundings around them when a session ends. EMDR can be a strong fit alongside our broader trauma therapy services, and your clinician will help you decide whether it’s the right next step for you — there’s no pressure and no obligation to choose a particular approach.
